Chiropractic First

Early historical records indicate that there may have been crude, non-specific attempts to manipulate the spine as early as 17,500 B.C.

"Get knowledge of the spine, for this is the requisite for many diseases."
Hippocrates, 460 - 377 B.C.

In Rome, by the Second Century A.D., Claudius Galen taught the proper positions and relations of the vertebrae and the spinal column. Galen was known as the Prince of Physicians, a title he was given after he aligned the neck vertebrae of a well-known Roman scholar whose right hand was paralyzed. Once the vertebra was aligned, nerve transmission was restored and the scholar was able to use his hand again.

D.D. Palmer (1845 - 1913) was the founder of modern Chiropractic. He thought that commonly used drugs and potions were toxic and created additional stress for ill patients. He was more interested in finding the cause of the disease and eliminating it through natural means.

  • Spinal adjustments correct vertebral subluxations (nerve interference). Based on the body's Innate ability to heal itself - and aided by the practitioner's ability to correct the nerve interference - chiropractic often brings an end to needless suffering from pain and discomfort in natural ways unknown in any other health discipline.

  • The Chiropractic Practice Objective: The professional practice objective of chiropractic is to correct vertebral subluxations also referred to as nerve interference in a safe and effective manner.

The Philosophy of Chiropractic

"Intelligence is present everywhere in our bodies…our own inner intelligence is far superior to any we can try to substitute from the outside."
-Deepak Chopra, M.D.

Here's To Your Health

Did you know...
A spinal adjustment is a specific application of forces used to facilitate the body's correction of nerve interference, allowing the body to heal itself naturally.

"While other professions are concerned with changing the environment to suit the weakened body, chiropractic is concerned with strengthening the body to suit the environment."
-B.J. Palmer, D.C.

Chiropractic And The Elderly

Did you know...
Statistics show that there are 42.3 million people aged sixty and over living in the United States. Of these older adults, 9.6 million experience adverse reactions to prescribed and over-the-counter drugs every year. The medications that are used to treat heart disease, high blood pressure, and vascular disease were found to be the most abused.

Here are some statistics from the World Health Organization regarding a study on adverse reactions to drugs:

  • 88% of all people had at least one problem with a prescribed drug.
  • 22% of these patients had a possibility of life-threatening condition perhaps caused by the medication.
  • 59% were given drugs that were either ineffective or contra-indicated.
  • 28% were given an incorrect high dosage.
  • 48% were given drugs that had severe interaction effects when taken with other chemicals.
  • 20% were given drugs that had the same effect of other drugs they were already taking.

"There is no effect without a cause. Chiropractors adjust causes. Others treat effects."
-B.J. Palmer, D.C.

Freedom of Choice
Dr. Harry Llewellyn's Experience

I was reading when I first fell a dull ache in my lower back. The ache continued on and off for days. I knew that a car accident in my childhood had caused a severe lordosis or abnormal inward curvature of the lumbar vertebrae, but the injury had never affected me until now. Being a medical doctor, I followed the typical routine of back x-rays and orthopedic surgeons. I was told I could avoid lying down on my back, tolerate the pain, or try surgery. Not one of these answers appealed to me.

My brother-in-law advised me to visit a chiropractor. After a month of adjustments, I could read without any back pain. After five months of adjustments, I drove 18 hours back to New Jersey without any back pain. Until then, my limit in a car was 30 minutes.

It's not the rapid recovery form pain that amazes me. It's my profession. As a medical doctor, I had been an "alleged" non-believer in chiropractic. However, now, I obviously believe in it. The pain in my right sacroiliac joint was gone. My knowledge of anatomy, physiology and biochemistry only strengthen my anticipation of the day when chiropractic is the brother of medicine.

The WILK vs. AMA Case

The American Medical Association started a campaign to destroy the credibility of any alternative medicine, particularly chiropractic. They even went so far as to not allow its members to even associate with them.

In 1976, Wilk vs. AMA was started. The case lasted two decades and ended all the way in the United States Supreme Court. Ultimately, the AMA was found guilty of conspiring with other medical health care organizations designed to restrict cooperation between M.D.'s and chiropractors in order to eliminate the profession.

While it's going to take some time for Medical Doctors to embrace the wonders of chiropractic and the many benefits it affords their patients, due to the Wilk vs. AMA case, the door has been opened.
